I love ladybugs. My daughters room is done in ladybugs. I was searching online for some ideas on how to make this cute ladybug hat and saw some cute ideas. So I after some trial and error I made this hat! It will look so cute on my daughter when she gets a little bit older.

Crochet Hat sizes with this HDC pattern:
Newborn baby head circumference: 13" - 14", Hat height = 5.5 to 6"= F hook, Baby - 3 to 6 months, Head Cir, 14" - 17 ", Hat height= 6.5 - 7"= G hook, baby 6-12 months, 16"-19" head cir., hat length=6.5-7"=H hook, toddler-preschooler (12 months-3 yrs), 18"-20" head cir., hat length=7" =I hook, child 3-10 yrs, head cir., 19"-20 1/2 "", hat length= 7.5"=J hook, teens, head cir., 20 1/2"-22", hat length, 7.5-8"= K hook

Supplies:
Black , white, and red yarn
I Hook, H hook, G hook,Yarn needle
Abbreviations: dc=double crochet sc=single crochet sl st=slip stitch ch=chain, hdc=half double crochet, 2sctog=2 single crochet together decrease
Made this for a toddler-preschooler (12 months-3 yrs), 18"-20" head cir., hat length=7" =I hook
Half Double Crochet Hat:
Instructions: I hook ch 4, sl st, to form a ring.
rnd 1. ch 2 (count as one hdc), work 9 hdc in the ring, sl st. (10 hdc)
rnd 2. ch 2 (counts as one hdc), hdc in the same stitch as the ch2, then work 2hdc in each stitch around, Slip Stitch (start to use a marker) (20 hdc)
rnd 3. *work hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around, no slip stitch or chain, (I would use a marker so you can keep track of your increased rounds) (30 hdc)
rnd 4. *work hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (40 hdc)
rnd 5. *work hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (50 hdc)
rnd 6. *work hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (60 hdc)
rnd 7. *work hdc in each stitch around,*repeat until you hat measures 7 inches long, (will be longer for a bigger size head, see above for sizes)
Ear flaps: Optional
Make 2
I hook , use red yarn
For the first ear flap, continue from your hat. 2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in hdc directly across from the last hdc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.
ch 2. hdc in next 14 stitches, turn. -14 sts
ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 9 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -12 sts
ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in next 7 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in last st., turn. -10 sts
ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, turn. -10 sts
ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 5 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -8 sts
ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, turn -8 sts
ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 3, hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn -6 sts
ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in next 1, hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -4sts
ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, pull through and fasten off. -4 sts
Trim: use black yarn, sc around the hat and ear flaps,
The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, I hook, use red and black yarn yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut yarn.

Face of the ladybug:
Black yarn
H hook
chain 20
hdc2tog= half double crochet 2 together decrease
row 1: Hdc in the 3rd chain from the hook, hdc in each stitch across. Turn(18hdc)
row 2: ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each stitch across, hdc2tog in the last 2 stitches. Turn(16hdc)
row 3. ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each stitch across, hdc2tog Turn (14hdc)
row 4. ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each stitch across, hdc2tog Turn (12hdc)
row 5. ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each stitch across, hdc2tog  Turn (10hdc)
row 6.  ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each stitch across, hdc2tog (8hdc) fasten off, sew the face at the bottom center of the hat, but sew the eyes and smile on first.


Eyes:
G hook
white yarn
Make 2
ch 2, work 5 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. (5sc)
Rnd 1. work 2sc in the each stitch around, sl st. (10sc)
Rnd 2.* 1sc in the next stitch, work 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat sl st .(15sc) fasten off.
Pupils: Make 2, Use Buttons. Sew them on the side of the white eye circle with needle and thread.
Sew on the eyes on the black face next to each other.
Smile: Sew in a smile line with white yarn, sew it in the center to secure the smile.

Black Dots

G hook
Black yarn
Make 8
ch 2, work 5 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. (5sc)
Rnd 1. work 2sc in the each stitch around, sl st. (10sc) fasten off. Sew 4 dots on the front of the hat and 4 dots on the back of the hat.

Antennas: Make 2, black yarn, F hook,
chain 9, in the 2nd chain from the hook work 2sc, then in the same chain, slip stitch, fasten off. Sew both antennas going in opposite directions coming off the face (seen in picture above).
Black line from the face to the top of the hat, take a yarn needle and sew in a straight line coming from the head to the to of the hat, secure the line with a little stitch in the middle and at the ends. Fasten off.
