Crochet Bear Hat Pattern





If you love bears than this hat is perfect for you! This crochet bear hat is done with dark and light brown medium worsted yarn.

Newborn Bulky Hat, instead of a D hook, Use a J hook with this pattern: http://www.amyscrochetpatterns.com/2015/01/crochet-baby-0-3-months-football-hat.html, when the increase stops, then continue the pattern as written in this pattern with the J hook. 

Supplies:
H and G hook

Abbreviations:
 dc=double crochet
 sc=single crochet
 sl st=slip stitch
 ch=chain
 hdc=half double crochet
 2sctog= 2 single crochet together decrease
 hdc2tog=half double 2 together

Instructions: H hook, dark brown yarn
child 3-10 yrs, head cir., 19"-20 1/2 "", hat length= 7.5"=H hook

How to Crochet a Double Crochet Hat Video:



rnd 1: Work 11 dc in a Magic Circle, sl st on top of the chain 3. -11 dc
Video on a Double Crochet Magic Circle:
rnd 2. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in same st. as joining, 2dc in each dc around. join with sl st on top of chain 3. -22 dc
rnd 3. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), *2dc in next dc, dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. -33 dc
rnd 4. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the next dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. -44 dc
rnd 5. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the 2 next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc. Repeat from * around, join with sl st. -55 dc
rnds 6-desired length (lengths are listed above), Ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in each dc around, sl st to join. -55 dc, Repeat this until your hat reaches 6.5 inches or for your desired hat size and length. 
Sl st with Light Brown yarn, Ch 3, dc in each dc around, sl st. Then back to sl st with dark brown yarn, ch 3, dc in each dc around. sl st. Fasten off. 


Ear flaps: If you would like to add ear flaps

Make 2, H hook

H hook, dark brown yarn
1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your brown yarn, begin the dc stitches, (like to have the seam in the back of the hat, so I do the ear flap on the side of the hat)
2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc directly across from the last dc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.

ch 2. dc in the next 11 dc stitches, turn. -11 sts

ch 2. dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -9

ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st., turn. -7

ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -5

ch 2. dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through -3


The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, use dark brown and light brown yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut yarn

Sc around the edge of the hat with light brown yarn.

Ears:
Make 2
G hook
light brown yarn

rnd 1. chain 3, join with sl st. to create a ring
rnd 2. 10 sc into the ring, sl st. join
rnd 3. *2sc in the next st, *Repeat to finish round (20 sts)
rnd 4. *1 sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, *Repeat, sl st.
(30 sts)
rnd 5. *1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next st, *Repeat, sl st. (40 sts) Fold the circle in half and sc the circle together to create a half circle. Then sew the two half circles on top of the hat to create ears about 2 inches apart.

Muzzle: G hook,  light brown yarn,
ch 2, sc from the 2nd chain from the hook 6 times, sl st -6 sc
rnd 1. sc in the same stitch, 2sc in each stitch around, use a marker to keep track of your rounds -12 sc
rnd 2. *sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -18 sc
rnd 3. *sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -24 sc
rnd 4. *sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -30 sc fasten off, stuff the muzzle lightly, and sew it on the middle hat toward the bottom. Sew in a nose with a yarn needle and dark brown yarn, just sew in the center triangle.

Eyes: Optional, you can add buttons or create eyes, Make 2, H hook, light brown yarn, ch 2, work 5sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st, and sew the eyes about 2 inches apart above the muzzle.
