How to Crochet a Owl Ear Flap Hat Pattern

Crochet Owl Ear Flap Child Hat


Enjoy this Crochet Owl Hat Pattern! This cute hat can be done in any size just change the hook size and use medium worsted yarn.

This hat is for a child with 19-20 inch head, 4 year old

Supplies:
H hook,
G hook,
Impeccable Brown, Yellow, and White Yarn
2 buttons

Abbreviations:
ch=chain
sl st=slip stitch
sc=single crochet
dc=double crochet
dc2tog=double crochet 2 together hdc=half double crochet

I made this for a 5 year old. See above for different sizes.

Instructions:
H hook
Brown yarn for the hat

rnd 1: Work 11 dc in a Magic Circle, sl st on top of the chain 3. -11 dc
Crochet a Magic Circle with Double Crochet Video:

rnd 2. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in same st. as joining, 2dc in each dc around. join with sl st on top of chain 3. -22 dc
rnd 3. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), *2dc in next dc, dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. -33 dc
rnd 4. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the next dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. -44 dc
rnd 5. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the 2 next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc. Repeat from * around, join with sl st. -55 dc
rnds 6-desired length (lengths are listed above), Ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in each dc around, sl st to join. -55 dc, Repeat this until your hat reaches 7 inches or for your desired hat size and length. Fasten off and Weave in the end

EarFlaps
Make 2
H hook, brown yarn
1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your brown yarn, begin the dc stitches, (like to have the seam in the back of the hat, so I do the ear flap on the side of the hat)
2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc directly across from the last dc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.



Row 1. ch 2, dc in the next 11 dc stitches, turn. -11 sts
Row 2. ch 2, dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -9
Row 3. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st., turn. -7
Row 4. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -5
Row 5. ch 2, dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through -3

The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, use brown and yellow yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut yarn.

sc around the edge of the hat with white yarn

Eyes:
Make 2
H hook
Brown, yellow and white yarn

Start with brown yarn

ch 2
rnd 1: work 5 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st. (5sc)
rnd 2: work 2sc in each stitch around, (10sc) sl st.

Change to yellow yarn
rnd 3: *work 1 sc in the next stitch, 2sc in next stitch, *repeat from* around, sl st -15sc

change to white yarn:
rnd 4: *work 1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around, work in continual rounds. -20sc
rnd 5: *work 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around -25sc
rnd 6: *work 1 sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around -30sc
rnd 7: *work 1 sc in the next 5 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around -35sc
rnd 8: *work 1 sc in the next 6 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around, sl st. -40sc
rnd 9: use brown yarn, sl st with the yarn, sc 18 times around for the eye brows. sl st.
place the eyes in the center of the hat, about 1/2 inch apart.
Use a button in the center of the eyes.

Nose:
yellow yarn
G hook
Ch 7
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (6 sc)
Row 2: Sc2tog, sc in remaining sts. (5 sc)
Repeat row 2 until 1 st remains, finish off leaving a tail long enough for sewing
place the nose right below the eyes in the center.

Tassels (Ears)
Cut 2 strands of each color about 8 inches in length. Using crochet hook pull through on the side of the hat, right above the center of the eyes on the top of the hat. Tie into a knot. Trim the ends about 2 inches long.
