I made this for my 6 year old daughter, her head measures 21 inches around. All sizes are listed above. Now for the other sizes, use this pattern below, but use a different hook size and stop at the length that is listed above. Then add the band the same way as posted below, but with the band just go a size smaller on the hook size.

Video on how to do a Half Double crochet Hat:

Abbreviations: dc=double crochet sc=single crochet sl st=slip stitch ch=chain, hdc=half double crochet

Instructions:  J hook, ch 4, sl st, to form a ring.
rnd 1. ch 2 (count as one hdc), work 9 hdc in the ring, sl st. (10 hdc)
rnd 2. ch 2, work a hdc in the same stitch as the ch 2, then work 2hdc in each stitch around, Slip Stitch (start to use a marker) (20 hdc)
rnd 3. *work a hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around, no slip stitch or chain, (I would use a marker so you can keep track of your increased rounds) (30 hdc)
rnd 4. *work a hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (40 hdc)
rnd 5. *work a hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (50 hdc)
rnd 6. *work a hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (60 hdc)
rnd 7. *work a hdc in each stitch around,*repeat until you hat measures 8 inches long, (will be longer on shorter for a bigger or smaller size head, see above for sizes),
Finish off with a slip stitch.

Band:
With White yarn slip stich your white yarn. Hdc in the same stitch as the sl st, then hdc around, sl st.
Next Round in the band: With Blue yarn, sl st blue yarn, hdc in the same stitch as the sl st, *work 2 hdc in the next hdc, hdc in the next hdc, *Repeat around, (work with out a slip stitch now.)
Next Round: *Work a hdc in each hdc around, *Repeat around
Next Round: *Work 2hdc in the next hdc, work a hdc in the next 3 hdc, *Repeat around
Next 3 Rounds:  In the next 3 rounds, *Work a hdc in each hdc around in the next 3 rounds.
Last Round: With White yarn, sl st with your white yarn, sc in the same stitch as the slip stitch, sc in each hdc around, Now Fasten off and Weave in the ends.

The Top of the Hat:
This will make the dent to make it look like a cowboy hat. At the center beginning part of that in Round 1, Start there, and on both sides go to the end of Round 3. Now take both sides of end of Round 3 and fold it together and Sew it together. Sew it together about 4 - 5 times to secure it,  just like the pictures above. Then fasten off and Weave in the ends.
Curl the ends with your hands of the band to make it look more like a cowboy or cowgirl hat!
