How to Crochet a Child Messy Bun Hat Tutorial

I already made an adult-size messy bun hat, but I've had a lot of requests for a child-size, too.  I uploaded a video tutorial if you need more assistance. I made it with Medium Worsted yarn and a H hook. I made this for my 4-year-old daughter, but if you would like it for a child who is older than 9 or so, I would use an I hook, or if you want it for a toddler, I would try a G hook, but follow the pattern below just change the hook size. This video shares
the ultimate tutorial for beginners crocheting the Crochet CHILD Messy Bun Ponytail Hat. This easy-to-follow tutorial will have you crocheting this hat in no time!

If you're new to crochet or just want a quick and easy hat to make, this tutorial is for you! This hat is perfect for beginner crocheters and will surely be a hit with friends and family! watch the video and get started on your own messy bun ponytail hat today!
Supplies:

On rounds 3-6 do you just double crochet around or is it a repeat of round one and two? Example round one, round two, round one , round two and so forth until you are finished with round 6? That is where I am getting lost. Is 3/6 just 4 rounds of double crochet or is it round one and two repeats?

Yes, 3/6 just 4 rounds of double crochet, so just do dc in each dc around only for those rounds, Not alternating.

Why is it 44 rows on the child's rim?Seems like that makes it bigger than the adults .....I'm new to crochet and reading pattern s. Thank you

Your not the first person to say this, its because I used a smaller hook size, which was a h hook and my daughters head is 20 inches, but if you child's head is smaller then I would stop the brim when it fits around their head instead of doing 44 rows

it looks the same as the adult hat when I make it as the pattern says to do. and it still fits my adult head

you used a H hook, my daughters head is 20 inches, what size is your childs head?

I would stop the brim when it fits around your childs head.

Love this thank you! I've made one for my sister and my 2 nieces! If I wanted to use a bulkier wool then would I change hook size and less stitches, or just the hook?

I would just go down a hook size, but you may be able to just do everything the same

Help!! I cannot end up with 60 stitches only 44 or 65!

amyscrochetpatterns said...

if you are getting 65, then take the last 6 or so of those stitches and make them sctog decreases

amyscrochetpatterns said...

if you get close to 60 then just follow the pattern as close as you can

I'm new to crocheting and especially to reading patterns. But the -number you have at the end of each row, is that how many of the stitches we should make? If so, how do you know where to place your needle so that you're getting that number? Like how many holes do you skip, etc., since the numbers are going down?? I'm confused about how to know.

amyscrochetpatterns said...

That's the number of stitches you should have at the end of each round. Each D.C. Should be done in one stitch but 2dctog decrease will be done in two stitches. Did you watch the video?

latinamarie said...

Yes I did watch the video, but it's a little hard to see what holes the needle is going into at times. Thank you for your feedback!! :)
