How to Crochet Duck an Ear flap Hat Pattern

Crochet Duck Ear flap Child Hat

Enjoy this Crochet Duck Pattern! This cute hat can be done in any size just change the hook size and use medium worsted yarn.

Crochet Hat sizes with this HDC pattern:
Newborn baby head circumference: 13" - 14", Hat height = 5.5 to 6"= F hook, 
Baby - 3 to 6 months, Head Cir, 14" - 17 ", Hat height= 6.5 - 7"= G hook,
 baby 6-12 months, 16"-19" head cir., hat length=6.5-7"=H hook, 
toddler-preschooler (12 months-3 yrs), 18"-20" head cir., hat length=7" =I hook, 
child 3-10 yrs, head cir., 19"-20 1/2 "", hat length= 7.5"=J hook, 
teens, head cir., 20 1/2"-22", hat length, 7.5-8"= K hook

Supplies:
Impeccable Yellow, white, orange and black yarn
I Hook
G Hook
Yarn needle

Abbreviations: dc=double crochet sc=single crochet sl st=slip stitch ch=chain, hdc=half double crochet, hdc2tog=half double crochet 2 together decrease

I made this for my 4 year old, measures 19 inches around with nice stretch and length= 7 inches long.

Instructions: J hook, ch 4, sl st, to form a ring.
rnd 1. ch 2 (count as one hdc), work 9 hdc in the ring, sl st. (10 hdc) 
rnd 2. ch 2 (counts as one hdc), hdc in the same stitch as the ch2, then work 2hdc in each stitch around, Slip Stitch (start to use a marker) (20 hdc) 
rnd 3. *work a hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around, no slip stitch or chain, (I would use a marker so you can keep track of your increased rounds) (30 hdc) 
rnd 4. *work a hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (40 hdc) 
rnd 5. *work a hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (50 hdc)
rnd 6. *work a hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (60 hdc) 


rnd 7. *work a hdc in each stitch around,*repeat until you hat measures 7 inches long, (will be longer for a bigger size head, see above for sizes)

Ear flaps:

Make 2
J hook , use yellow yarn
For the first ear flap, continue from your hat. 2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in hdc directly across from the last hdc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.
Row 1. ch 2. hdc in next 14 stitches, turn. -14 sts
Row 2. ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 9 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -12 sts
Row 3. ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in next 7 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in last st., turn. -10 sts
Row 4. ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, turn. -10 sts
Row 5. ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 5 stitches. hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -8 sts
Row 6. ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, turn -8 sts
Row 7. ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in the next 3, hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn -6 sts
Row 8. ch 2. hdc2tog, hdc in next 1, hdc2tog. hdc in the last st., turn. -4sts
Row 9. ch 2. hdc in each stitch across, pull through and fasten off. -4 sts

Trim: use white yarn, sc around the hat and earflaps

Eyes: Make 2, G hook, Black, white, Start with black yarn,

rnd 1: ch 2, work 5 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st. (5sc)
rnd 2: work 2sc in each stitch around, (10sc) sl st. Change to white,
rnd 3: sc in the next 4 stitches, sl st. turn, work 4 sc next 4 stitches, sl st. fasten off. Sew in a white slit for the center of the eye with white yarn. Place the white part of the eye facing upward, on the top.
Place the eyes about 1/2 inch apart in the center of the hat.

Muzzle/beak: G hook, orange yarn,
ch 2, sc from the 2nd chain from the hook 6 times, sl st -6 sc
rnd 1. sc in the same stitch, 2sc in each stitch around, use a marker to keep track of your rounds -12 sc
rnd 2. *sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -18 sc
rnd 3. *sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -24 sc
rnd 4. *sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -30 sc
rnd 5.*sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, -36 sc
fasten off. Fold the circle in half, attach it to the bottom center part of the hat below the eyes. Sew the beak in the center, make sure it still can open and close.

I love your patterns and just finshed the duck hat with earflaps for my infant granddaughter. Where do you measure the length from, end to end or center to end, it just does'nt look quite right.

The center of middle of the top of the hat to the end of the hat for length.
