How to Crochet a Preemie Winnie the Pooh Hat

Winnie The Pooh Preemie Hat

Sizes for Preemie:

1 -2 lbs
Baby's Head Circumference is 9" - 10"  (so hat circumference. should be about 7.5" -8"  Height of hat should be 3.5 - 4" inches
2 - 3 lbs
Head Circumference 10" - 11 1/4"  hat circ = 8.5" - 10" Hat height = 4" inches
4 - 5 lbs
Head Circumference 11 1/2" - 12 1/2" hat circ = 9" - 11.5" Hat height = 4 to 4.5" inches
5 1/2 - 6 lbs
Head Circumference 12 1/2" - 13" hat circ = 11" - 12" 28-33 cm Hat height = 5 to 5.5" inches

Abbreviations: sc=single crochet sl st=slip stitch ch=chain


Single Crochet Preemie Hat


F hook, red and yellow yarn for a preemie baby.  This is a for a 4 - 5 lbs baby,
Head Circumference 11 1/2" - 12 1/2" hat circ = 9" - 11.5" Hat height = 4 to 4.5"


Instructions:

F hook, Yellow yarn ch 5, sl st, to form a ring.

rnd 1. work 6 sc in the ring, sl st. (6sc)
rnd 2. work 2sc in each stitch around, sl st  (12sc)
rnd 3. ch 1, work *1sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat around, sl st (18sc)
rnd 4. ch 1, work *1sc in the next two stitches, 2sc in the next stitch *repeat around, sl st (24sc)
rnd 5. ch 1, work *1sc in the next three stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat around, sl st (30sc)
rnd 6. ch 1,  work *1sc in the next four stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat around, sl st (36sc)
rnd 7- until your hat reaches 4 inches, ch 1, *work 1sc in each stitch around, sl st.  *repeat around,  fasten off.
 If you want to cuff your hat and flip the bottom up, then you could make the length a little longer.

Trim: Change colors; add red colored yarn with f hook, single crochet around the trim (bottom of the hat) and sl st.

Ears: Make 2 Ears, G hook, Yellow yarn
rnd 1. chain 3, join with sl st. to create a ring
rnd 2. 10 sc into the ring, sl st. join -10 sc
rnd 3. *2sc in the next st, *Repeat to finish round -20 sc
rnd 4. *1 sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, *Repeat, sl st. -30 sc 

Fold the circle in half and sc the circle together to create a half circle. Then sew the two half circles on top of the hat to create ears, about 2 inches apart.

Eyes: Make 2, G hook, Black yarn, ch 2, work 8 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. sl st. Sew the eyes 2 inches apart above the muzzle/nose.

Eyebrows: Use a yarn needle and sew in 1 inch line above the eyes with black yarn.

Muzzle: G hook, yellow yarn ch 2, sc from the 2nd chain from the hook 6 times, sl st -6 sc
rnd 1. ch 1, sc in the same stitch, 2sc in each stitch around, sl st -12 sc
rnd 2. ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, sl st -18 sc
rnd 3. ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, sl st -24 sc
rnd 4. ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, sl st -30 sc
rnd 5. ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat, sl st -36 sc
fasten off. Attach to the bottom center of the hat. Using stuffing as you sew the muzzle on the hat.

Nose: Use black yarn and a yarn needle and sew a upside down triangle in the center of the muzzle and keep sewing with black yarn until you fill in the nose. fasten off. weave in the ends.


For a smaller size for a preemie hat:

This size: 2 - 3 lbs
Head Circumference 10" - 11 1/4" hat circ = 8.5" - 10" Hat height = 4"

F hook,  yarn ch 5, sl st, to form a ring.
rnd 1. work 6 sc in the ring, sl st. (6sc)
rnd 2. work 2sc in each stitch around, sl st  (12sc)
rnd 3. ch 1,  work *1sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat around, sl st (18sc)
rnd 4. ch 1,  work *1sc in the next two stitches, 2sc in the next stitch *repeat around, sl st (24sc)
rnd 5. ch 1, work *1sc in the next three stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat around, sl st (30sc)
rnd 6- until your hat reaches 3.75 inches, ch 1, *work  1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch  *repeat around,
 If you want to cuff your hat and flip the bottom up, then you could make the length a little longer.
