How to Crochet a Ponytail Holder Messy Bun Beanie Hat Tutorial

I already made a Messy Bun Hat Pattern, but this one you will use a ponytail holder on top rather than starting the brim first.  I made this Ponytail Holder Messy Bun Hat for an Adult, but you can adjust the size by changing the hook. This list of sizes are down below. I created a video if you need more assistance. You will need a ponytail holder to create this messy bun hat. You start out with double crochet inside the ponytail holder and this is where your hair will come out of. Are you looking for a quick and easy crochet project? If so, you'll love this Ponytail Holder Messy Bun Beanie Hat tutorial! This hat is made with a simple crochet pattern, and it's perfect for keeping your hair warm and stylish.

Supplies:
J hook for an Adult Size, but change the hook
Pony Tail Holder, about 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches
Pink Love Yarn
Abbreviations:
ch=chain
sl st=slip stitch
sc=single crochet
dc=double crochet

front post double crochet and back post double crochet

I don't understand how row 1 can be 2 DC in each st around when there's nothing saying how many sts are placed around the band. Or am I not seeing it on this page?

sorry, that was typo, I corrected, it supposed to be ch 3, and then 21 dc in the ponytail holder, for a total of 22 dc

Thank you so much for sharing your pattern. I just finished making one. It made up quickly and nicely. I used red heart super yarn. Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing! Approximately how many yards of yarn did you use for the adult pattern?

I've made a few messy bun hats, but I really like this pattern. It is so much easier to start the hat with the pony tail holder and work down; no seaming of the band, and I love the front post, back post ribbing at the bottom. This is going to be my "go to" messy bun hat from now on. Thanks for all the tips to make the hat smaller for different age groups! Thanks so much, Amy!!!

I really like this pattern, I have made the messy bun hats using both your patterns, this one seemed easier to me. I like the front/back post brim as well. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing it is really appreciated.

I love this pattern. I have had several friends ask for a messy bun hat and I am so glad I found your pattern. I have made 4 of them so far. They work up fast and are a joy to crochet.

You did not say to join in the first round but I have this big hole. Should i not slipstitch at the end of the first round to the first chain 3?

Unknown said...

Shouldn't I join at the end of round 1?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

yes I would join on top of the ch 3

I love this patten. It is by far the easiest and fastest messy bun hat to make. Thanks

I recently completed this pattern for my niece. The pattern was easy an quick...just my style. I need to create another for my other niece without the messy bun as she has short hair. Do you have a pattern like this without the messy bun part?

For child and teen do you still start with 22 dc?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

here is the one I did for a child, http://www.amyscrochetpatterns.com/2016/12/crochet-messy-bun-or-ponytail-child-hat.html

This is so great, my husband at times needs to use oxygen and forgets to put it on before his hat and cap/hood, with this he does not have to undo everything, but just move the mouth piece up, it will also protect him from the cold air. Thank you for the pattern.

Can we make the childs one with the elastic?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

here is the child's version, its similiar but I changed the hook size, http://www.amyscrochetpatterns.com/2016/12/crochet-messy-bun-or-ponytail-child-hat.html

I have a question. I knit two sample hats for daughter to check the size, sending the sheet that suggested the yarn and hook. They were a good fit but she bought yarn (Fleece Lite not Red Heart) which calls for a size L hook. Can you suggest how to adapt/adjust the pattern with these changes?

I have never made one of these before should I double the hair tie or just use as is it seeks like a large hole like 22 stitches doesn't cover it?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

not sure I understand your question, but the way I did is, Take the Ponytail holder and sl st into it with your yarn, ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), work 21 more dc in the ponytail holder -22 dc

I don't understand what to to with the tail when making first slip stitch around the ring do I tie it off crochet over it confused.

amyscrochetpatterns said...

did you watch the video, I usually slip knot onto my hook then I slip stitch into the ring, then weave in your tail after you work all your stitches in the ring.

Instead doing the fp&,BP could you continue to DC to length then sc last row
